How to look amazing in your wedding photos in Greece: 3 things I wish every couple knew before their Destination Wedding

How to look amazing in your wedding photos in Greece: 3 things I wish every couple knew before their Destination Wedding

When couples book me as their destination wedding photographer in Greece, one of the questions I hear surprisingly often is: “Do you have any advice on how we can look our best in our wedding photos?”

My answer has very little to do with posing. Beautiful wedding photography isn’t about looking like a model. It’s about feeling comfortable, confident, and allowing yourself to be fully present on one of the happiest days of your life.

After photographing destination weddings across Greece for many years—from the dramatic cliffs of Santorini to the beaches of Milos, the charming streets of Paros, and the hidden gems of Samos—I’ve started noticing patterns. The couples whose photographs feel effortless usually aren’t the ones who spent thousands on designer accessories or followed every wedding trend. Instead, they paid attention to a few simple details that made a surprisingly big difference.

If you’re planning a destination wedding in Greece, here are the three pieces of advice I give almost every couple.

How to look amazing in your wedding photos in Greece: 3 things I wish every couple knew before their Destination Wedding

1. Let Greece Give You Your Glow

This is probably my favourite piece of advice because it costs absolutely nothing. If you’re flying from the United States or Canada for your Greek island wedding, try to arrive a few days before your wedding instead of landing the night before. Most couples already know this helps with jet lag. What many people don’t realise is that it also helps with your photographs.

After photographing hundreds of weddings in Greece, I’ve noticed that couples who spend a few relaxed days by the sea simply look different. They’re calmer. They’re less stressed. They’re smiling more naturally. And yes. They usually have just a little bit of colour from spending time outdoors. I’m not talking about getting deeply tanned. In fact, I don’t recommend that at all.

A soft, natural glow photographs beautifully under the Mediterranean sun. It gives your skin warmth without looking artificial. The key word here is natural. Spend an afternoon at the beach. Enjoy a long lunch by the sea. Take a swim. Walk through a little Greek village. Let the sunshine do what it naturally does.

One thing I personally wouldn’t recommend is getting a spray tan or chemical tan right before your destination wedding. Sometimes they photograph beautifully. Sometimes they don’t. I’ve seen spray tans look orange under certain lighting, leave uneven marks around the hands or wrists, or fade in unexpected ways after a day in the Greek heat. The real Greek sunshine is one of the reasons couples choose Greece in the first place. Let nature do the work.

2. The Greek Wind Is Beautiful… Until It Meets Your Hair

If you’ve never visited the Greek islands before, here’s something you should know.

The wind is almost always part of the scenery. Even on what feels like a perfectly calm day, there’s usually a gentle sea breeze. As a photographer, I actually love it. It makes veils float. Wedding dresses come alive.

It creates movement that makes photographs feel cinematic instead of stiff. Hair, however, is another story. I’ve photographed brides whose hairstyle looked absolutely perfect while they were getting ready. Then we walked five minutes toward the beach for portraits. Suddenly, tiny strands of hair started blowing across their face in every single frame. Nothing was “wrong.”

But instead of focusing on the couple’s emotions, your eye keeps noticing that one little piece of hair. It’s such a small detail, but photography is often about small details. Whenever I photograph a destination wedding in Greece, I recommend mentioning one thing to your hairstylist: “We’ll be taking portraits outdoors near the sea.”

That simple sentence changes everything. An experienced hairstylist will know exactly what to do.

Whether you’re wearing your hair down, choosing soft Hollywood waves, or an elegant bridal updo, ask them to use enough strong-hold products so your hairstyle survives the sea breeze—not just the ceremony.

And don’t worry…Your hair doesn’t have to look stiff.A great hairstylist can create movement without creating chaos. There’s a difference between romantic movement and constantly brushing hair away from your face every thirty seconds.

3. Grooms, Let’s Talk About Suit Colours

This might be my most controversial opinion. Every photographer has one. Mine is navy blue suits.

Before anyone gets upset… Blue is actually one of my favourite colours. I wear blue. I decorate with blue. I love blue. But not every shade photographs the same way.

Navy blue is one of the most popular wedding suit colours, and I completely understand why. It’s classic. Elegant. Safe. But Greece isn’t a ballroom. It’s a completely different environment. Think about what’s surrounding you. Whitewashed churches. Bright stone pathways. Soft beige cliffs. Golden sunlight. The deep turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea.

Your bride is wearing a light, flowing gown that reflects all of that beautiful Mediterranean light. Against that setting, a very dark navy suit can sometimes feel visually heavy. It draws the eye more than it complements the overall scene.

After photographing so many weddings in Greece, I’ve found myself loving lighter colours much more.

Some of my favourites include:

  • Ivory
  • White
  • Beige
  • Light grey
  • Soft blue
  • Baby blue
  • Classic black tuxedos for formal evening weddings

These colours feel fresh. They reflect light beautifully. Most importantly, they create balance between the bride, the groom, and the incredible scenery surrounding them. Of course, wear what feels like you. If navy blue has always been your dream suit, wear it proudly.

But if you’re still deciding, I encourage you to try on a lighter colour while you’re shopping. You might be surprised by how perfectly it fits the atmosphere of a Greek island wedding.

One More Piece of Advice Nobody Talks About

Can I give you one bonus tip? Slow down. American couples often tell me how fast their wedding day went. And they’re right. It disappears in what feels like five minutes. When you’re getting married in Greece, you’ve travelled thousands of miles to celebrate in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Don’t rush from one event to the next. Build breathing room into your timeline. Enjoy breakfast together. Watch the sunset. Walk through the little streets after dinner. Take ten minutes after your ceremony just to stand together and realise…”We’re married.”

Those quiet moments often become my favourite photographs of the entire day. Not because I posed them. But because they’re real.

Your Wedding Photos Should Feel Like Greece

When you look back at your wedding gallery twenty years from now, I don’t want you to remember only what you looked like. I want you to remember how Greece felt. The warmth of the sun on your skin. The salty air coming from the sea.

The sound of church bells echoing through a whitewashed village. The breeze lifting your veil. The golden light just before sunset. Those are the things that make a destination wedding in Greece unforgettable.

And those are the moments worth preserving. If you’re planning a destination wedding in Greece and are looking for a Greece wedding photographer who captures genuine moments with a timeless, editorial style, I’d love to help tell your story. Because the best wedding photographs aren’t about perfection.

They’re about remembering exactly how it felt to marry the love of your life in one of the most beautiful places on earth.
